Smart Home Security

Working within the Technology, Product, and Experience group at Comcast, my primary focus lied in evolving the home security facet of the xFi app: a consumer tool built to lead the next generation of digital products for smart home device management and high-speed data products.

  1. Sensored Recording

obejective/goal

In lieu of continuous video recording, there’s a desire to introduce or replace camera video recording triggered only when motion is detected.  This will drive a huge bandwidth saving without sacrificing user experience if we can deliver on the promise of capturing what matters to our users.

How

A small cross-functional team representing product, technology, design, and research have met to explore and answer key questions on value, usability, and feasibility. After the initial meeting, separate meetings with each functional team were held to further dive into each respective area with domain experts in each of the functional area.

User Research findings

Facilitated working sessions with SMEs and UXR to collect detailed snapshot of current market landscape.

process

Exploration showcasing ways to enhance user camera viewing functionality in the mobile experience rather than the controller hub:

  • Person, vehicle, and pet detection

  • Filtering by date or event

  • Detailed clip selection with option to share, flag or save

2. Device Linking + Camera Controls

Problem

When smart home controls reside in a solitary tab, it creates friction for users to enter camera view & only have the ability to talk through the camera live view.

objective

Solve this point of tension by adding the affordance to control the paired smart locks & lights within camera view for seamless interaction.

3. Area of Interest

Objective

Provide users a way to reduce unwanted notifications caused by motion events.

how

Allow users to specify the area to monitor by enabling them to draw a specific area to their specifications.

4. Corti

objective

Streamline the flow of natural language processing. Our primary goal was to offer all teams a way to gracefully introduce conversation-based Dialog Flows in addition to synonym triggers.

how

We were able to reimagine this tool to better suit the user while the product was in initial stages and employee trials.
Working hand in hand with developers & product engineers, we facilitated many workshops and user studies to ensure we created
a solid solution. Together we created a software tool that creates voice flows for the XA customer tool, Voice Remote and more.
This royalty-free solution is projected to save the company millions.

One tool to rule them all

After multiple user interviews, we realized that teams were using several alternate processes and proprietary, fee-based tools to create voice products. We wanted to create one singular tool that teams could define easily & use across other platforms without missing a beat.

user access permissions

A quick action to set permission levels was the most requested ask that appeared from twelve stakeholders over six interview sessions. Within the “Users” page I enabled a simple affordance with a dropdown selection to set permission level.
